The Perfect Mother-Son Dance Song For Your Wedding
Mother’s Day was just Sunday (Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!), and my thoughts immediately went to the Mother-Son Dance Song. I’m a wedding DJ/MC. Are you surprised?
I realize that picking the ultimate Mother-Son Dance Song can feel pretty overwhelming. Obviously, she’s your mom, so you want it to be special and perfect for her. Plus, you run into information overload with the number of songs you have to choose from. BUT, if you follow the advice from someone who’s been a wedding DJ/MC for 5 years and 60+ weddings, aka ME, the task of picking the song you and your mom dance to will not only be less daunting but you will get to include your mom in the wedding planning process as well! (She’ll appreciate that more than you might think)
Before you start…
DON’T start googling Mother-Son Dance Songs. You want the process of picking out your song to be as simple and easy as possible and adding #allthethings that the internet has to offer is a sure-fire way to overload you with things to pick.
INSTEAD, start by listing all the songs that remind you of your mom. What were her favorite songs she loved when you were growing up? Were there any songs that she sang to you as a baby?
Once you’ve made your initial list, consult with your mom. Ask your mom what songs she thinks would be good for the Mother-Son Dance. Odds are she will already have a song, or multiple songs, in mind. Share what you’ve come up with on your own. If there are any songs that match, you’ve narrowed your search already!
Some things to keep in mind
-Consider It a Dedication
Obviously, you want the song to be special to both of you. One way to make it special is to have it serve as a dedication, either to your mom from you or from your mom to you.
-Don’t forget the vibe!
Deciding what kind of vibe you want for the moment is going to help eliminate songs that don’t fit it. Do you want the more traditional, slower dance song? Or would a lighter, more fun song be more appropriate and fit you two? But better yet…
-Why not have the best of both!?
Combining two songs for the Mother-Son Dance make sense if you have a few songs to choose from. This is a great way to make your dance unique to you. You can start off the dance ith the more traditional style and then liven up the moment with a fun, uncommon selection or rendition.
An often overlooked part of the wedding planning process is including the bride’s and groom’s parents. If you pick out songs that remind you of her ahead of time, not only will it be a thoughtful gesture but it will also be more meaningful than you may realize. If you have enough of songs that come to mind, you could even create a Spotify playlist for her.
But what if you can’t think of any good songs!?
You’re in luck! I’ve put together a Songs For Mom just in case you need some inspiration. The styles run the gambit from Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra to The Beatles and Pink Floyd to Blake Shelton and Carrie Underwood to Natalie Merchant and Tom Petty. I made sure to add tons of variety because we all have different tastes and different musical experiences. Check it out! I hope it’s a good resource for you. And, feel free to share it with your mom or others who are in the process of planning their wedding, too!
